[An open letter to my email subscribers]
Perhaps you have been following me on Instagram, where I’ve been talking about making big changes. If not, let me fill you in…
Recently I’ve been in deep-dive thinking, analyzing mode around not just my business, but my life. What do I really want and what will make me happy?
I recently have had the opportunity to step away from it all and focus on this question, allowing myself space to find some clarity. And what I discovered is that there are a lot of things we do in our businesses each day that neither bring us business, or joy.
So I began to ask myself, why do these things then?
It’s amazing how often I am chatting with fellow business owners and they say things like “I really don’t like social media, but I have to use it for business” or “I really don’t like doing videos, but everyone says it’s the way to connect with your audience, so I do them” or how about “I’m not consistent with my newsletters…probably because I don’t like getting them myself, and don’t want to clog people’s inboxes with messages they don’t want or read!”. This list goes on. People tell me they don’t read newsletters, they don’t watch videos, or they don’t read blogs.
So the question remains, “WHY?”
Here’s me being totally honest. Every client, and I mean EVERY client I have ever had, came to me through either referral or meeting me in person. This could be at a speaking event where I spoke, an in-person networking event, or at a conference. But I have NEVER signed a client from an email newsletter, a social media post, or a video I shared online.
And truth be told, I don’t like marketing any other way than simply being myself and genuinely showing interest in others. So you know what? I’ve decided to completely scrap all the usual ways of marketing, and in fact, I’m not really going to be marketing anymore at all. I plan to keep my podcast and blog, because I enjoy them, but to everything else I’m saying “see ya later”.
Sure I’ll be attending networking events, but simply because I love meeting new people, making new friends, and having the opportunity to help and connect with others.
And yes, I’ll still be online. But for the purpose of building relationships with my network, staying in touch with people I’m interested in and care about, and as a platform to share the things I care about.
Finally, if you enjoy my newsletters and storytelling, I’ll be now sharing these right here on my blog. That way, if you want to read what I have to say, it’s there for you. If not, you won’t have yet another email filling your inbox.
And as always, if you have any questions about your business, I’m here to help. Feel free to reach out.
